Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

Debt Collection, Been Subpoena'd

I was a primary signer on an account 3 years ago that my co-signer had said he would pay. I had trusted this due to the length of time I had known them. Time and time again I had offered to pay what I could and was told to worry about myself. The debt collector's started calling. Then he was subpoena'd in the fall and this was all taken off my credit report. Yesterday I received a supoena myself for $7000, and was told my car and paycheck would be garnished. Is there anything I can do to prevent this, or bring to court? The co-signee has refused any calls from me after the time he was subpoena'd. I never received any of the bills from this account either.
