Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

My friend is currently being held in Grundy County jail, Morris, IL for aggravated robbery, 2 counts. He alledgedly robbed the Chase Bank, Morris, IL. You might know the case, it's been in the Chicago & local papers, as well as the news. We can not afford a lawyer, and are having no luck finding a good criminal lawyer that will take the case pro bono, so we have a public defender at this point.

My question is this: The very next business day after my boyfriend turned himself in, his bond was set at $50,000. My friend was not informed of the bond hearing, & was not allowed to be present. He also had not yet been appointed his public defender. Is that legal? I've never heard of one's bond being set while the charged was totally unaware of the bond hearing, and without having any legal representation?!

On another note... any of you criminal lawyers interested in handling this case pro bono? Should be a very interesting case and trial!

Sincerely,Todd
