Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

I recently bought a car, I paid 1600 for the down payment and arranged to make payments. A week before tha payments were due they called me to tell me I needed to sign more paperwork. When I went in they lied and said they needed to "check the mileage" on the car and they took my key. I had a spare so I went to my car and left because they refused to give me my other key and said I had to wait to speak to the owner. I signed a contract on the car and I have all my paperwork. They failed to file the paperwork and I had to call them about paying my car note, I had all intentions on paying and I never knew there was a problem until I called THEM. Now they are telling me they are going to report my car stolen. Can they do that?

Do you have the paperwork to prove you're the owner? If yes, then you're in the clear. However, if there's more facts we should be aware of, report this question again with the added info. Generally this is more of a civil issue than criminal, since the basis for the allegation is a disagreement over whether a contract was formed or not.
