Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

My wife had been charged with retail theft under $300. She tried to return some items buy was unsuccessful. She then shopped and paid for the items. She had some other items she was going to take to layaway as well as the failed return items. She proceded to the doors to get a soda from the machines- still inside the store. At that point WalMart took het into cudtody and the police were called. The officer took the return items to her car and charged her for retail theft. She posted $300 and was released the next day. What will happen at the court date? She has no way to pay for a lawyer. Help.
