Re: dui

Assuming you qualify to have a public defender represent you, the public defender will represent you on the criminal DUI charge. The public defender will not be able to help you with any challenges to the statutory summary suspension of your driver's license. If you have (or can come up with) the money to hire a lawyer, you should consider doing so. It won't cost you anything to schedule a free consultation with a DUI lawyer in your area, so why not at least go talk to a lawyer and see what he or she has to say?

Re: dui

I definitely advise people in your situation to hire a private attorey if they can do so. The private attorney should be able to give your case the time and attention it deserves or requires. Your attorney can advise you regarding the defense of hte charge against you, the possibility of negotiating a plea bargain, the need to deal with yoru driver's license, and the possible effect of this charge in relation to a nursing license. If you can not afford an attorney, a public defender may be appointed to represent you on the DUI charge itself.
