Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

custodial rights

What would be the consequence of giving up the rights to my child. We were never married, but are in the process of a 'divorce' and my son is almost 16 yrs old and his father wants me to give up custodial rights, what does this mean?

Re: custodial rights

To give up your legal rights basically means you no longer have a say in any of his life's decisions from then on. To give up complete custody means that you may be giving up any visitation or other rights to make decisions in his life. Your question is very broad and you should consult an attorney before making a decision on such a serious issue.
