my wife will be giving birth soon, and I live in Illinois, can I take FMLA for the 12 weeks allowed by law for the care of my wife while she recuperates without loosing my job

You may be able to take parental leave during the first year after your child's birth. Keep in mind that your employer is not required to pay you during this leave under the FMLA. FMLA will only apply if your employer has 50 or more employees who work within a 75-mile radius, you have worked there for at least one year, and you worked at least 25 hours per week in the year previous to the leave.
