I loaned my ex-boyfriend money when we were dating, now he thinks he doesn't have to pay me back. I have texts that prove that he owes me almost $1000. Do I have a case?

It depends. If the texts prove a promise to pay you back, you are entitled to repayment. Otherwise, the money. You gave him would be construed as a gift.
