Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

Can't Afford My Rent

I am going through a divorce and am basically in finacial ruin - and it's getting worse by the day.

As such I can longer even come close to afford the rent on my apartment - not to mention that I can longer even afford food and gas.

I spoke to the leasing office when I knew my finances were going south and they said I could turn in my keys along with two months rent to exit the lease.

However, I have no money left and am living paycheck to paycheck so I don't have the two months rent they want.

I found a new much smaller apartment that I can afford. I have been actively trying to find a subletter with no success.

Is there anything I can do to exit the lease without ruining my still OK credit which I am holding on to by a thread?

Or credit aside - is there anything I can do to exit my lease?

Thank you!

Re: Can't Afford My Rent

As to the rent issue - no. You have a contract (Lease) and they can hold you liable for the term of the lease. Credit issues aside - if you're in financial troubles a bankruptcy may clear everything - including the lease problem. I would be glad to discuss the issue with you during a free consultation. Just give me a call. JJL
