Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

Rent increases without a lease

How much can a landlord increase rent without a lease? My rent is increasing by $175 a month while other people in the same building is only increasing by $25. I had an agreement with the landlord for a reduced rent but his children are taking over and have set all rents the same.

I do not believe there is any law which states how much the rent can be raised. In your case is appears that the new owners are trying to get everyone to pay the same amount. You mentioned you had an agreement with the previous owner--was that agreement in writing? If so you might be able to hold off the increase until your lease expires.
