Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

My boyfriend lives in New York in an apartment he just resigned a lease for under a verbal agreement that the landlord would accept my small dog when I moved out there. All plans have been made (tickets booked, work notified of my leave) and the landlord is now saying the dog can not be accepted. Since my boyfriend resigned the lease under the verbal agreement the dog would be accepted but did not recieve anything in writting is this something we can fight? Any insight would be helpful as I am not familar with New York laws and if this would be something worth trying to fight. Thank You
