Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

Condo Rental

I am a 2 year condo owner who is interested in renting out my unit. I was told by the president of the association that renting my unit was not permitted and stated in the ''by-laws''. Upon review of the by-laws, I was unable to find specific information about this subject and communicated this to the president and the treasurer at a private meeting. The president AND the treasurer explained that this unwritten rule has always been an assumed understanding between owners. With nothing in writing, can I assume that I have the right to rent my unit as I see fit without any legal ramifications or association fines? Am I under any obligation to share my intentions with the other owners or board members?
