Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

Can't get title for my car from Illinois Secretary of State DMV

I have 1989 Pontiac Grand Prix. When I purchased it in 1992, I obtained a loan from the Motorola Credit Union at 1301 East Algonquin, Schaumburg Illinois 60196. The loan was registered as a lien with the Illinois Secretary of State in the name of the ''Lending Credit Union'' at 1301 East Algonquin, Schaumburg Illinois 60196. I think the dealer made the mistake of submitting the name of the Credit Union incorrectly. I paid off the loan and the Motorola Credit Union has issued a release note for the loan. I submitted the release note to the Illinois Secretary of State so that I could get the title to the car but because the name is different on the lien registration, the Illinois Secretary of State's office won't release the title for the car to me. Since the sale occurred more than 7 years ago, the dealer has told me they've destroyed the car sales records. The car is broken down and since it's old, all I want to do with it is junk it but the junk yard won't take it without a title. The Secretary of State's office told me that I need to get a court order to get the lien overridden and get a title for the car. I've never done that before and if I have to hire a lawyer to do this, the process will get costly. How can I get the title?

Might I assume that YOU have the vehicle title in your possession? If so, take it with the letter to the credit union, and have them stamp the release on the title, and re-send to SOS. This might be a simple solution.
