Legal Question in Securities Law in Illinois

Who's responsible for hospital bill

If your husband has no health insurance, and has to go to the doctor or hospital is he responsible for the bill?

Can they make the wife pay the bill? I was told that as long as the wife does not sign any papers she is not responsible for his bill. Is this true.I could put him on my health insurance, but he does not help pay the premium.

My are my legal rights.

Re: Who's responsible for hospital bill

In Illinois, both the patient, and the patient's spouse, are responsible for the reasonable cost of necessary medical expenses. It does not matter whether the spouse signs anything or not. Nor does it matter whether there is insurance. Necessary medical expenses are considered "family expenses" under the law of Illinois, and both husbands and wives are equally liable for the costs.
