Legal Question in Social Security Law in Illinois

i am 52 years old. have degenerating discs in my lower back. havent worked since jan 19th 2010. gone thru epiderals exercising to seeing a surgeon. he says surgery would make it worse. gonna have me try a trial time for work but not sure how that will work or if work will even let me because of all the resrictions. i have working there for 25 years and may have to take my imrf disability benefits. was wondering how social security works so wouldnt hqave to use my retirement income. any help would be appreciated
