Legal Question in Tax Law in Illinois

Hi my band plays a lot of local weddings and town events etc. we've been doing this for several years but now the city has caught wind of how much we are getting paid and is saying we have to pay taxes. A grand total of $15,000. We are not a company and have no official place of business. All of the checks we received were written out to one of the band members. Also, two members that were in the band last year are no longer in the group. One of them is dead. Is there anyway the government can force anyone to pay this ridiculous amount of money?

Yes. If you do nothing, the City will impose the tax and attempt to collect it through voluntary or involuntary measures. If you participate in the process and appeal the determination, you may find some relief provisions in the law, or the application of the law.
