Legal Question in Tax Law in Illinois

Irs

In Feb of 2006 I refinanced my home to pay outstanding debts. I contacted the collection company that held two of the accounts and asked what I owed, then I paid it. There was no settlement agreement. They called in December to say I now owed 10000 in fees. I said, no, I don't and never heard from them again until IRS said I had 8000 of unreported income due to debt forgiveness. Is there anything I can do?

Re: Irs

The debt forgiveness can be disputed with the IRS, but they will require the creditor to issue a corrected 1099.

This means you need to work on both sides to get this matter resolved.

Let me know if I can assist.

Good luck to you.
