Bills of an inherited house

My mother recently passed away. I now own half of her house with the other half being owned by my Step father. I am not living there, but until it is sold, he is currently living there and expects me to pay for half of the phone, cable tv, electricity, water, etc. Do I have to do this?

Re: Bills of an inherited house

Normally no. He should be responsible for the bills that you mentioned. You would be liable for taxes and insurance. You will have to make sure that the heat/water/ sewer are taken care of in order to preserve the house. You might have a causable action against your step-father if he doesn't take care of the upkeep of the property and causes waste to the house. If there is such a cause of action you can request a partition and force the sale of the home. There is nothing in Michigan property law which would require you tom pay a monthly cable bill or telephone service for services which you didn't sign up for or use. If your step-father continues to be unreasonable you should consider talking with an attorney and have the attorney draft a letter explaining the law to your step-father.
