Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Illinois

Where can I get probate information

My mother passed away in 1998 and my lawyer had told me there was a credit card making a claim but had been able to put them off til after my sister graduated college (I was legal guardian as our father passed away in 1990). I am now ready to make some financial moves but cannot get in touch with my lawyer, is there anyway for me to find out on my own if I owe $$ to anyone else? I don't want claims coming out of the ''closet'' and would rather take care of them now.

Was an estate opened? If so then check the court house and pull the court file. If a credit card company was owed money then they no doubt filed a claim against the estate and the claim should be in the file.

On the other hand if you have not heard from the credit card company since 1998 or from a collection agency regarding the debt then one could assume the debt was written off. The only person responsible for the debt would be the estate and if the estate has no money then the credit card company does not get paid.
