Dear Sir / Madam,

You need to reply to the legal notice and set matters right if the same has been accepted on your behalf by your father in law. It is possible that somebody has done it on purpose to spoil your reputation.

You can defend it as a 'bad service' or service not at a proper address. Unless the person giving you notice is able to prove that - you used to reside their, and it was your last known address to him, or you have given that address in any contact or contract with him.
