Legal Question in Family Law in India

American Citizen Wants To Divorce Dhaka Hubby

I am an American citizen who got married in Dhaka 7 years ago. I don't love this man and I want info on obtaining a divorce, getting an annullment, or claiming abandonment.

I married him because I was looking for someone to take care of my daughter and myself financially. I had not met him until a week before we were wed, we never consumated the marriage and I have not had any contact with him since getting hitched.

I was told that this person wanted a wife, had a lot of money and would take care of us. He more than likely just wanted someone to get him over in the country. No money exchanged hands so what we did was not illegal. Obviously both of our reasons for the nuptuals were wrong.

The problem is that he is not trying to divorce me (I've talked to his cousin). He is holding on to the hope that he will be able to come to this country. He doesn't know that I've withdrawn the petition to get him over here years ago. Immigration figured out that this wasn't a real marriage and I've been dating someone that i truly care for since that time. How do I take care of the situation from the U.S. or do I need to take care of this via Dhaka?

It doesn't sound like much of a marriage to me. You did not mentiion your age at the time of the marriage.

In my opinion, you would be eligible for either a divorce or annulmant, but I would need to meet with you to discuss this further. FYI, I am a matrimonial attorney in Long Island, with over 30 years' experience. For more information, please visit my web site.
