does a father have to wait for the child to turn 5 years of age before asking for the custody in the court

No, the custody of child may be in discretion of the court depending upon facts and circumstances of each case.

no, its not a pre condition as the welfare of the child is of paramount consideration. you mean to say that if the child is 2 years old and mother unable to take proper care of the child due to any reason whatsoever, the father cannot ask custody. there is no bar for custody and meeting rights.

It all depends on the circumstances and situations and discretion of the court and in any case not the age of the child.
