Legal Question in Criminal Law in Indiana

I went to court in february of 2007 over a theft charge. I asked the judge if i could take the felony so i could join the military because my recruiter said i could not leave while on paper or dealing with a court situation. the judge said yes, i can do that. so i said ok lets do that then. but then he put me on probation for 18 months. i told him that i cant do that because i couldnt leave on paper and his exact words were...well we cant just give you nothing and that was it. fyi this was in elkhart, indiana. now, its been 10 years and i would like to know my best route and the cheapest route to get this class d felony off my record, should i use a pro bono atterney, a real atterney or can i do it by myself.

1. "Pro bono" attorneys are real attorneys. Saying otherwise is offensive to any attorney who volunteers their time to provide legal advice for anyone, including people on this forum like me, who get no compensation for this answer.

2. You will need to hire an attorney to pursue expungement of your record; I would suggest doing this with a lawyer in Elkhart County.

3. The odds of doing it yourself successfully are like the odds of me overhauling my car engine successfully: possible, but unlikely.
