Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana

Age that support stops

I have read several entries on this site that say that support in Indiana continues until the age of 18 (or imancipatiion). I was divorced in 1983 and am sure that my original divorce papers say that I am only financially responsible until my child is 18. Is this a recently changed law?

Re: Age that support stops

Actually, support continues until age 21, unless emancipation occurs at age 18 or later.

Emancipation can occur if the child is 18 or more, is not enrolled in school and does not intend to enroll in school and is capable of working and supporting him/herself.

Hope this helps answer your question.

Re: Age that support stops

In the absence of specific language in the final judgment, in Florida support obligation ceases at age 18 unless emancipation (marriage, military, self-supporting, etc) occurs prior to that age.
