Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Indiana

My 17 year old son was recently suspended from high school for an incident that occured after he had signed out of his school and was enroute to a career center that is 7 miles away from his high school. In short he attends High School approx half day then signs out and drives himself to another location to attend a building trades class put on at the career center, his school does not provide transportation for the students to and from the career center. He was taken into custody after a traffic stop for possesion of a marijuana pipe with residue in it on his way to the career center and released to me, charges pending. The high school that he had signed out of has now suspended him because of the incident, saying that he was still under their "umbrella" and it violates their rules. My question is since they are required to sign out, that should release the school of any liability, responsibilty or control of my son and he should no longer be under their umbrella?

Does he get a grade for the career center. Is the Career Center part of the same school system? What does the student manual say, if anything?
