Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Iowa

First of all, I am an Iowa resident. I was divorced in 2009. My ex-husband was listed as a dependent under my medical insurance. I checked my credit report recently, and saw a collection for $416. Apparently he had visited a psychiatrist while we were separated and neglected to pay the bill, which I can only imagine was towards a co-pay. I have never received a bill or even a phone call regarding this payment and collection. I wasnt even aware of it until I checked my credit report. The only reason my name would even be attached to it is because he used my medical insurance. Am I responsible for this payment? Shouldnt I have been notified about it?

The key would be what your divorce decree says about this, if anything. If it says he's to be covered under your insurance then you're on the hook. Taking him off the policy does not mean you relieved yourself of the obligation to comply with the terms and conditions of the decree.

On the other hand I can hardly see how one can institute a collection without any kind of notice to the alleged debtor. That's another question entirely, separate from whether you were required ot insure him forever.
