Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Iowa

Using copyrighted material

I create cross stitch and afghan patterns, most by request. I have been approached about creating a pattern with an NFL logo.

1. Do I need to get a release to use the logo in my design if I am giving it away?

2. Do I need to get a release if I am selling the design or final project?

3. Will the person requesting the design need a release to sell or donate the final project.

Re: Using copyrighted material

Legally, yes. The logos are the trademarks of the NFL. If you are making just one, it is doubtful the NFL will bother you over it. If you make a bunch, you may get in trouble. Whether the release is good for a buyer depends on the release, whether it is personal to you or a general release. Just mail the NFL a letter telling them what you plan to do and ask permission, that is the right thing to do.
