Tenants Rights

I suspect I have what is called a slum lord. I reside with a roommate and my son. Our current landlord (3rd one in 18 months). Refuses to have all adult parties on the lease stating that it causes problems with bookkeeping and will not give us a rent receipt. The lease begins in February and states "Only the above named persons shall reside in the residence. Additional people shall pay $1000.00 per month additional rent." Only one name is on the lease. My roommate and I are in fear that when we move out we will get stuck with paying additional fees because all names are not on the lease. Is there anything we can do to amend the lease?

There is no good way to unilaterally amend your lease. I can't think what "bookkeeping" problem would be caused by having more than one person on a lease. In fact, as a landlord, I would want as many people as possible to sign, so I would have more people to go after if I didn't get my money. Was there a written lease agreement in effect with any of your previous landlords? If so, the terms of that lease would remain in effect until its termination.

As for the receipt problem, I would suggest paying only with checks, so you will at least have your cancelled checks for proof of payment.
