Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Italy

My great grandfather passed away in 1968 in Messina, Italy
and left my father his house and property. My fathers cousin called and wrote requesting my father sign over the place and property to him, which he did not. His cousin moved in and took over the place, do we have any rights
to my great grandfather estate after all these years.
Understand the cousin has been living there and paying the
taxes all this time.
