Legal Question in Family Law in Jordan

international divorce

My husband is Jordanian but temporarily lived here in Texas when we met and when we married (May 6, 2000). We later hired an immigration attorney to file papers for his citizenship, but our marriage never made it that far. We separated 18 months ago, after he became violently abusive to me. I moved out, and within 30 days, he moves back to Jordan. I found out through a cousin of his two weeks after he left the US. So I assume that he attempted to use me then abandon me. Therefore, how do I get a divorce? All I have been able to find out so far is his new phone #.

Re: international divorce

As your last maritial residence was in Texas and you have lived here for at least 6 months, Texas is where you file for divorce. The process starts with the filing of a divorce petition. You will need to serve him with the divorce citation. If you cant find him in Jorden, then maybe you can serve one of his relatives, such as his parents or the cousin you referred to. After the divorce has been on file for sixty days, and he has been served, you can obtain a divorce, if he hasnt responded. If he has, then you will have to set the matter for a final hearing where you will be divorced there. Let me know if I can help.

Good luck.

Re: international divorce

The process is basically the same as a regular divorce of two people in the area but may take a little bit longer than normal due to the notice/service requirements. I suggest that you contact an attorney in your area to handle the matter for you.
