Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Kansas

Someone I met online told me to use their credit card number to sign up for a webcam service. After signing up I realized that the card was most likely stolen so I canceled the account. I don't believe that any charges were made, and I called in to make sure the account was cancelled. Should I contact the credit card company for the number I used and let their fraud department know? I realize that what I did is most likely considered fraud.

If you thought the number was there's when you placed the order, you did not commit fraud. You beleived that you had their permission to use their accoutn to order the service. However, you should keep all the online information you have about this person, in case your fears are true. It is not unheard of for online friends to purchase services for one another. It seems that it now happens more than between friends thatcommunicate face to face.

If you have confirmed that no debt was incurred for the credit card account, then there woudl be little or nothing for the credit card cpompany to do, if it turns out to be their card. You woudl probalby lose this friend, if that happens. To be safe, keep the identifying information from your online communications. That way if the police, FBI or another orgnaization comes to you, you can show what really occurred.
