Legal Question in Criminal Law in Kentucky
shoplifting
I was recently caught shoplifting at Kohls for the amount of 38.00. The police were called and i was issued a court date. I am a full-time student and well on my way into an accounting career. I am so ashamed of what i did and i was wondering if it is going to stay on my record. I also was wondering if i should hire an attorney and if i was able to bring up a diversion program personally or would have to have an attorney do it. Please help me with the issue. Any advice would be helpful.

Re: shoplifting
You may be eligible for the diversion program. I would consider hiring an attorney as your chance of getting the diversion program is greater if you do. The diversion program, if you qualify, would allow you to attend classes over a short period of time after pleading guilty to the underlying charge and then paying some fees. If you complete the requirements, then you can have the guilty plea set aside and eventually expunge the charge as if it never happened.
