Unmarried for 13 years

Me and my girlfrien have been together for 13 years and 2 kids. If we split ways can do we half to split everything?

There is no such thing as common law marriage in Kentucky (this may vary if you moved from a state where you did have a recognized common law marriage).

So, each person owns what he or she brought into the relationship. Stuff you bought together can be very tricky to handle and you may have to resort to civil court, but family court will not have jurisdiction over your stuff. Family court will have jurisdiction, though, over child custody and child support issues.

Some folks believe that avoiding marriage keeps things simpler even for long-term relationships. There are some examples of that being true, but overall it complicates things.
