Legal Question in Business Law in Louisiana
US Business Vs. Mexican Business
I own a business in Louisiana and import rustic furniture out of Mexico. I purchased some furniture from Mexico; it came later than guaranteed which threw off my payment schedule.
This company came into the US and went to one of my wholesale accounts and slandered my business to them on several occasions and finally caused me to lose a 30,000 contract with them. I still owe this Mexican company 9,000. My business is in such a mess from the slander that this Mexican Co. has caused we are in real financial distress. My husband and I are both working 2 full jobs now trying to keep afloat.
In November, the Mexican Co. owner and Assistant came into my store and forced me to write post dated checks to cove the balance. I continued to tell them that I did not have the money but they would not leave until I wrote the checks. I have since (2 days ago) put a stop payment on the checks. What are my rights? They cost me thousands of dollars. I am scared and broke. I do not know what my options are. Please any help would be appreciated.

Re: US Business Vs. Mexican Business
If they lied about your company, you can sue them for defamation and hold on to their money to off set what they owe you if you win. If they threatened you then you may have a criminal claim against them. It all depends on the facts.
