Am I required to repay a payroll overpayment to an ex-employer?

If you did not earn the money, yes. After giving you proof of the over payment, your refusal to pay it back will be converted to a theft. And a theft over a certain amount is a felony with the max of 10 years in jail. Its like finding money on the street. Let me ask you this....if the employer UNDERPAID you, could he claim he did not owe you any more because you cashed the check?
