Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Maine

My girlfriend and I purchased vacant land from a friend of her family. Four days after the deed is filed in both our names, she broke up with me and says the property is hers. I contributed $12000 and her mom contributed $6000 for the purchase. How should I proceed?

Is the title recited on the deed in your names jointly? There is a legal presumption that you own it together, and if your contributions were not 50% each, and you cannot agree on how to buy each other out, there is a legal proceeding known as "partition" that can be filed in Court. However, given that the total price appears to be only 18,000 it makes more sense to agree to mediation and avoid legal costs of litigation.
