How, where and when did "Blue Laws" originate? What are the purpose of "Blue Laws"?

I can't tell you of their origin, except they probably came about because of religious influence. Basically, they prohibit certain businesses from opening on Sunday. They have been done away with in many communities, as I'm sure you know.
