Legal Question in Business Law in Maryland

Co signer

I currently co-sign for a relative and would like to remove my name from the account for Student loan with Sallie Mae. Is this possible? The relative is working for ample wage, but refuses to make payment on time.

Re: Co signer

You can ask the lender to remove your name, but the chances of them agreeing to do so are virtually nil. The reason you were asked and agreed to co-sign in the first place is because your relative lacked sufficient credit standing at the time of application. You are a guarantor, and if there is a default, the lender will look to you. In addition, late payments are probably having an adverse effect on your credit score. You should check your credit record with the 3 credit reporting agencies, Transunion, Experian and Equifax--this is free.

I'd try and persuade your relative to start acting more responsibly--after all, you were there for them when they needed you.
