Legal Question in Business Law in Maryland

hi i want to start an online business in maryland and i have had trouble navigating the sites. i was trying to figure out what the legal age is in maryland to register a business(sole proprietorship) with the maryland dept of assesments and taxations. in addition, i was wondering if all sole propietorships are required to register for a trade name or if you are allowed to operate under your legal registered business name.

All good questions. Here's a few answers that might help:

1.) I'm not aware of any minimum age in Maryland to register a business or obtain a business license. If you are selling a product that is subject to State sales tax or your are trying to obtain a business license (which is issued by the County where the business is located -- you can obtain them from your County Clerk of Court), you will need to attempt to register, no matter your age. If your application is denied because of your age, you may need a parent or guardian to act in your place.

2.) You are not required to register your trade name, although you may, even without registering. You are free to operate under your legal registered name as well. I strongly recommend registering your trade name -- it puts the world on notice that you are using that name and have a claim to it.

Best of luck.*****The above is for informational purposes only and does not create an attorney-client privilege.*******
