Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maryland

Mr Morris, I am due in court later this month for a merit trial in a credit card case. I have not used this card in over 7 years but have been trying to pay this account since then. Unfort. i lost my job so i had to stop payment now they are sending me to court. I just received a merit trial notice. I do not know how any of this works and i have no money. Should i try to contact company that is sueing and try to work something out or attorneys listed on summons? i can not afford a lawyer i am a single mother of 1. no frills life living on minimum wage. what should i do to start fresh and help get this matter cleared up?

If you face a lawsuit from a creditor you may wish to contact the creditor to see if you can work out some compromise or payment plan. Bankruptcy may be an option when someone faces a lot of debt and no realistic means to pay though there are costs associated with filing for bankruptcy. If the creditor obtains a judgment, the law has some limits on what they can collect and the defendant can file a motion to exempt some property from garnishment.

While I hope this post helps it is not a substitute for legal advice and you may wish to consult with a lawyer.
