Typical state charges for possession of a firearm would be three years per firearm. If a convicted felon, then the penalty is at least five to fifteen years. Under federal law, the penalties for the typical charge would be one to ten years, and perhaps life for a convicted felon. However, in order for a criminal court to have jurisdiction over a 17 year old, he or she would have had to have been previously adjudicated in a criminal court. If not, then the juvenile court would have jurisdiction. A juvenile court may commit a delinquent child to the Department of Juvenile Services until age 21.
