Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

I would like to divorce my husband. He is from the U.K. and lives there. I have not seen him in 4 years and he never sent back the divorce papers I originally sent him 4 years ago, although he did acknowledge that he received them and had filled them out. I don't know his current address or anyone who can get in contact with him, and he will not return my emails. I have tried contacting him in every way I know how over the course of these four years. We have no children, nor shared property. How can I get the divorce finalized without him?

File a complaint in your county circuit court asking for only a divorce. You will have to first send the filed complaint to the last known address by registered mail, or find a process server who might be able to track him down. If that is unsuccessful, get an affidavit from the process server or the returned mail and file a motion in court for service by publication in a newspaper of general circulation in the same region or where you think he might be living. Once granted you put a legal notice containing the complaint and court summons in that paper and wait for the time for him to answer to expire. Then you file a court motion to allow you to proceed "ex parte" which means by yourself. By now I bet you're thinking you need a family law attorney to help you.
