Re: getting a divorce soon

The purpose of the mediation is to have an informal discussion to see if the two of you can work out a financial settlement. These are very important, because you are entitled to your share of all marital property and also to a portion of your husband's retirement benefits (as he is of yours if you have any). You don't necessarily have to take a lawyer to the mediation, but I strongly urge you not to agree to anything until you have consulted an experienced family law attorney and allowed him/her to review any proposed agreement and advise you if it's fair or not.

Your divorce will only go into effect when one of you files court papers and the case goes through the legal process. If you have worked out a financial settlement, as well as provisions dealing with children if there are any, before you go to court, the divorce will be completed in a few months and go smoothly.

I would strongly urge you to have an attorney that is experienced in family law matters. If the mediation is for property, then I would urge that you bring an attorney.
