Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Guardianship of teenagers parents deceased

Hi,

I'm in Maryland and have twin nieces, 17yo. Their mother died 3 yrs ago and their father just died too. There is no will. The girls want to live with me. What do I need to do to establish legal guardianship ? Do I need to use a lawyer or is this something I can do myself ? There are no other relatives interested in raising the girls. Thanks.

You need to file a court petition for guardianship. I recommend you engage an attorney who is familiar with this type of legal matter, because there are certain rules and procedures which must be followed.
