Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Maryland

Mad Ex Roommate

I used to live with a guy whom I dated briefly. In doing so he used to GIVE me money for various things such as trying to convince me to become his girlfriend again. I took the money and sometimes I would encourage him giving me money for the reason of making his chances better at getting back together with me. After a nasty end to our living arrangment he has now decided that that money he GAVE me were loans. At no point did I ever say or agree that they were loans. Now is is trying to get me to give him money back. It has been maybe 2 years since all of this began. And now he is saying that he is going to try and bring me up on extortion charges. So I am trying to find out excatly what could happen. I mean I do not believe that he has a leg to stand on.

Re: Mad Ex Roommate

Your ex is obviously bitter, but he has no claim for return of the money he gave you. In the eyes of the law, they were gifts--maybe with an ulterior motive, but gifts nonetheless. While your "encouragement" was perhaps somewhat dishonest, no prosecutor is going to take on this case, and if he sues you, he won't get anywhere.
