Either of you could benefit from the other's status, depending on the circumstances. An I visa holder could change status to become a dependent on another's F visa, and vice-versa. Neither is a direct path to permanent residency, though. F-1s have the advantage of the one year of post graduation "optional practical training," during which they may seek employment in their field of study, which could lead a US company to file for an immigrant worker visa for them. The I visa holder may be able to do something similar based on their own work. But again, neither an I or an F by itself leaves one eligible to adjust to a permanent resident.
