If you signed a lease to pay monthly rent, the landlord does not need to provide you with any correspondence demanding that you pay rent or back rent. I strongly recommend that you hire a Maryland real estate attorney who specializes in tenant representation to provide you legal counsel.

Were you served with notice of the lawsuit and were you notified of the trial date? If not, you may have grounds to vacate the judgment against you, separate and apart from the other issues you identify. I encourage you to visit my blog -- www.marylanddebtdefense.com -- to learn more about defending yourself against such suits. You can also email me at [email protected] if you have any questions. Good luck.
