Legal Question in Personal Injury in Maryland

I am the manager of a store located in maryland. I had recently let go one of the employees for constant misappropriations and blatent disreguard for company policy. The day after I had let him go, I had come across a statement that he had written to the owner of the company, filled with quite a bit of false information, so much information, that now, by means of the same way I received the original information, the owner is now trying to find out how to fire me. Do I have a case in slander/wrongful termination or even libel?

If the former employee made a knowingly false statement about you with malicious intent, you have a legal claim for libel. However, in reality, this person is probably judgment proof--i.e., even if you took him to court and won, it would probably be impossible to recover anything. If you have earned enough of the owner's trust to be made manager, it seems strange that he would rely upon this disgruntled employee's statements as a basis for firing you. But his doing so would be within his rights since in all likelihood you are an employee "at will", meaning you aren't working under a contract.
