Changing my name from the one on my SS Card

I want to know how to change my name from John to Jon so that all my legal document will reflect this new spelling of my name.

Rule 15-901 in the Maryland Rules of Court sets forth the procedures for obtaining a legal name change. It is not a difficult procedure, if you understand the rules, but I would advise you to see a lawyer about it. The lawyer's fees should not be a lot, but there are some other costs, whether or not you have a lawyer, including a filing fee and,usually, the cost of publishing a notice in a general circulation newspaper in the area where you live. It is important that you certify that the reason for the intended name change is not for any illegal or fraudulent purpose. When you have legally changed your name, you can then apply for a new Social Security card with the new name.
