Illegal tatics by Collection Agencies

I reside in California and my credit card company handed my acount over to a collection agency. I have nothing to hide from this credit card company ( 9 YEARS )and they know my personal data ( phone # address, ETC.). THe collections company has been calling my Mother who lives in Massachusetts pretending to be a friend of mine and asking what my phone # is address etc.Is this illegal to call on one's mother and ly about their identity to gain personal information about someone?

No it is not but if the debt is 9 years old you dont have to pay it.
